If you paid attention to the NYC club scene in the late 80's and early 90's, then you just may remember Damn Cheetah. They were on the verge of getting a deal when suddenly grunge came in and pulled the brass ring from their reach. Loss of interest and hope they went their seperate ways. Within the last 5 years, they've reunited and recorded Primal. The release of this shows they're more in business than ever, because this is their first album. I've been listening to this a lot, which is more than I can say for the majority of today's popular music scene. Hey, at least the underground music scene has something to offer for someone who isn't brainwashed into liking grunge or nu metal or whatever they're calling it this week.
1) Damn Cheetah 10/10
Starts out with the purring of a sleeping cheetah (nice touch, to go with Damn Cheetah). Then right out of the blue, the guitars get this going with a rocker reminscent of the hard rock you know and love. Has an AC/DC feel, but they're not a clone like Dirty Looks or Rhino Bucket, I'm not sure to put it next to, I mean it's 80's hard rock but it's really fresh sounding. Oh, want something you haven't heard before? Try the end of this song, it has some sound effects, then a sudden crash with the guitar.
2) Maybe Tomorrow 9/10
Very fun good time rocker. Optimistic too. There's always tomorrow, but if you just got Damn Cheetah's Primal, you don't have to wait till tomorrow!!!
3) If You Like What You See 9/10
Everybody is on a roll. As musicians, these boys get along just fine. Nuff said.
4) Forever 9/10
Like any hard rocking 80's metal band, Damn Cheetah gives us a ballad. In the first verse, you won't believe how much Les Brown sounds like Geoff Tate. This is up there with Firehouse's "Love Of A Lifetime" in top 80's metal wedding ballads. The music is played so perfect here. Would have been a major hit in 1990, 91.
5) Love Thunder 8.5/10
Cool opening to this one. The song is pretty cool too. I wish some major label like Sony or something would sign Damn Cheetah. They could really get the 80's metal kicking ass again.
6) Some Kinda Woman 7.5/10
Starts out with kind of a Raging Slab-ish guitar riff. Sounds very cool. A little different from the other songs, but I kind of like it. Not the best prey from Damn Cheetah, but not that bad either.
7) Without Your Love 9/10
Begins with 12-string acoustic guitar playing. Have you ever noticed that normally when a band has two or more ballads on an album. Usually one's good and the other one's sort of mediocre. You know what I'm talking about? Well let me put it this way, that's not the case this time.
8) Gimmie Gimmie Gimmie 9/10
Gimmie Gimme Gimmie some more!!!
9) King Of The Kill 9/10
Kind of a bluesy/swingish beat. But Les Brown screams to remind you that you're still listening to Damn Cheetah. These guys are talented. The album is diverse while sticking to a certain feel. Excellent *does air guitar like Bill and Ted*. Very amusing you guys, you're doing great. The closest thing to a dud so far is "Some Kinda Woman" and that still got a 7.5.
10) Hungry For Love 8.5/10
You know what else Damn Cheetah is hungry for? Rave reviews, people!
11) Tonight 9/10
Piano ballad. If you like albums that finish really mellow, then go primal over this! The song picks up later on, then slows down again. This is kind of a Danger Danger-ish ballad. Not one, not two, but three great ballads on one album!
Comments
This is perfectly done 80's hard rock. Like I said, if that's your thing, go primal over this, go apeshit, go crazy. If I were you, I'd buy this album. First chance you get, dude. Go to the ends of the earth if you have to!!!
