This album is half of Sweet F.A.'s entire collection (two albums). This band was formed in 1988, got a major label deal within 11 months of their first gig. This album was released in 1989, stalled at #161 on Billboard charts. MCA, their label was disappointed with the sales of Stick To Your Guns and dismissed them from their label. They released the follow-up Temptation independently. That was the last time Sweet F.A. had ever been heard from.
1) Prince Of The City 9.5/10
Awesome opener. The riffs, the guitar, and the bass and the vocals get along. This song deserves to be "King Of The World" instead of "Prince Of The City." Because this is a truly awesome song. Reminiscent of Bulletboys' "For The Love Of Money."
2) Nothin' For Nothin' 8/10
Sweet F.A. has a momentum. You'll want to air guitar listening to this bad boy here.
3) Rhythm Of Action 9/10
Rocker with a midtempo beat. Not very fast, but it still makes you wanna get up and dance. I've seen the video for this before. I haven't seen it in a long time, but I remember liking it. This song is pretty sexual. I really like this one. It's not a very fast rocker as I said, but damn, these guys jam on this one.
4) Do A Little Drivin' 8/10
Starts out with quiet, undistorted guitar, tamborine and vocals. The music changes at about 36 seconds. You want to do a little drivin'? Give this song a test drive.
5) Daily Grind 8.5/10
Very cool opening guitar riff to this song. The music calms down in the verses. I like what Sweet F.A. is giving us here.
6) Stick To Your Guns 9/10
With the hit of the distorted guitar, you'd expect a rocker......no no no, this ain't a rocker. This is an acoustic ballad, that like the typical ballad picks up in the chorus. This has a little bit of southern lead guitar playing in the second verse. The lead solo goes with the song. The part towards the end is cool, where it plays a little faster, then it gets back to the regular tempo of the song. This song could have set Sweet F.A. off like a cherry bomb.
7) Whiskey River 10/10
Nothing short of a perfect song! The riffs, the beat rules, the vocals kick your ass all the way to the end of the Boston Marathon!
8) I Love Women 10/10
I'm sure there's plently of guys out there who can relate to this song title. I can. Know what else I love? This song. Because of the title? Not completely, the song just shoves everyone in sync (I said in sync, not N' Stink).
9) Breakin' The Law 8/10
A very Bulletboys-ish song. You'd be breakin' the law if you didn't give this song a spin.
10) Heart Of Gold 9/10
Ballads are pretty scarce on this album, and this is one of the few times one shows itself. This is the type of ballad that would have shot Sweet F.A. to the top. Maybe it would have if it was released as a single in place of "Rhythm Of Action". I like that song, but this song would have given Sweet F.A. a longer (and more successful). I wish this song could be on the 80's ballad compilations. You don't need a heart of gold to be into this.
11) Devil's Road 10/10
Yet another perfect song. Everything is working awesomely here. I like the backing vocal harmonies before the chorus. This sounds like the type of rocker you would have seen on Headbanger's Ball back in the heyday.
12) Southern Comfort 8/10
Acoustic song, this time around, it's not a ballad. I think Extreme got an idea from this album, finishing the album with an acoustic song. When they finished Pornograffiti with "Hole Hearted." OK, I got off on a tangent, now to get off OF the tangent. Not bad. The album's finished nicely.
Comments
Why wasn't this band the next big thing? What do you need to do? You need to get away from your computer, go to the used record store (this album has been discontinued) and get it. What more do you want me to say?
