I remember it well, it was just a couple years ago, I bought an issue of Spin Magazine, it had Axl Rose on the cover so I decided the check it out. There was a whole thing on metal, including an article about the 80's Sunset Strip scene. They talked about all the bands we know, like Poison, Motley Crue, Guns N' Roses. The also talked about unknowns like Paradise, Jetboy, Junkyard, Pair-A-Dice. Now I've heard what Paradise (not Pair-A-Dice, or the Canadian band called Paradise, this Paradise is American) sounds like. Right now, I'm about to review their only album Do Or Die. Their career was a case of do or die. They released an album, it didn't do (take off) so they (as a band) died. I'm gonna "do" this review 'cause I don't want to "die."
1) Nightmares 10/10
What a song title for a band called Paradise. This song is no nightmare though, it's a lot closer to paradise. Moderately fast rocker, with very cool guitar riff, sounds pretty simple. They started doing that with the guitar around 1992, simple but awesome guitar riffs. There's only one real main riff to this song. But make no mistake, this is an awesome tune.
2) Voices 8/10
Acoustic intro to this song, the distortion finds its way in at about 33 seconds. Midtempo rocker. Very good song but it doesn't match the awesomeness (is that a word?) of "Nightmares."
3) Firin' Line 9/10
Awesome rocker, powerful, the guitar riff rules. This band is tight, and I like that in a band. As they say in the song "Firin' line, it's do or die." Paradise chooses to do, not die.
4) Fever 10/10
This is an awesome sounding semi-fast rocker. Paradise has got the fever to play an kickass rocker like this one. I love this one. Paradise has got the "Fever."
5) Need A Little Love 10/10
Paradise does have the fever. Did you think I was joking? If you did, think again. Because this song needs a little love, give it some, this is an great tune. This song shows the Danger Danger feel. It shouldn't go without saying that Paradise has their own sound. Too bad this Paradise only released one album. If "Smells Like Dog Shit", I mean "Smells Like Teen Spirit" hadn't turned everybody into drones, Paradise would have had an awesome career ahead of them.
6) Ghost Town 8.5/10
Great song, but not as good as the last two songs. Too bad the 80's metal scene was a ghost town when this was out.
7) When You're Gone 9.5/10
Acoustic ballad. Distortion kicks in during the chorus. Paradise is an awesome band. I wish they could have come out a few years earlier, they may have been more successful. This is the type of ballad that would have put Paradise over the top!
8) I Want More 9/10
The title says it all, nuff said.
9) Undercover 9.5/10
Rocker with a "get out of my way" guitar riff going. Everything here is in perfect sync. The verses are great, the chorus rules, the solo rules. You know that thing that was on VH-1 recently where they tried to reunited bands from the 80's? Paradise should have been on that list.
10) You're 16 10/10
Fun to listen to while you're at the beach during the summer nights. It's acoustic all the way through, not really rocking, but just something you can bring your acoustic guitar to the beach and play while you're at the beach.
Comments
This, as I said would be Paradise's only album. This was released on the German label Dream Circle in 1992. When you listen to this, your ears will be in Paradise!!!
