I know what you're thinking, this is a very pointless review,
1) Now 10/10
Now, I'm gonna review "Now" for you right now. Really, I won't do it later I'll do it now. All right now, enough overuse of the word "Now." Starts out with some sound effects, and kicks into acoustic guitar. Sounds modern, but in an entertaining Def Leppard sort of way. Rick Allen shows off his wonderful one-armed abilities. Now (there's that word again) even though this is modern sounding, it's sounds in no way like alternative. It sounds very much like Def Leppard. Don't worry people, this isn't Slang II.
2) Unbelievable 7/10
WOW! Is this Def Leppard? Sure doesn't sound it to me. Now (Damn, that word again!) this isn't a negative statement, this is very AOR. This sounds like an updated Stage Dolls ballad. Do you see me jumping up and down over this? No. Do you see me banging my head against the wall either? I don't think so. It's "Unbelievable" that Def Leppard can pull of AOR as well as they did here. Doesn't make it the best song, though.
3) You're So Beautiful 9/10
Top-rate production. This sounds like an AOR-ized version of "I Wanna Touch U." It's much faster though, definetely has that Adrenalize feel. One of the closest songs to the regular Def Leppard sound. This is the formula for success in this day and age.
4) Everyday 8/10
Wow, does Def Leppard have a great formula going here. I wish this album had been more popular, but it's not very much like classic Def Leppard, which could very well have contributed to the flop off the charts. It debuted at #11, then the next week it was #38, then it was #76, then #88, and it just kept falling faster than a boulder flying full speed down a steep hill. Anyways, I fell off track. This is an acoustic rocker, you can tell it was written with acoustic guitar.
5) Long, Long Way To Go 10/10
This is the song that would have the album if Dumbass Records, I mean Island Records had released this as a single in the U.S.A. This is one of the best ballads, I've heard in a long time. It's very touching, by the end of the song, you'll be in tears. I've got something to say to the people at Island Records: WHAT IS YOUR DEAL? THIS WOULD HAVE BEEN A SMASH. DON'T YOU WANT TO MAKE MONEY? YOU DO? Then next time you come across a potential smash, PROMOTE IT!
6) Four Letter Word 10/10
Very traditional Def Leppard. Being that I adore Def Leppard, and their classic sound, I'll give this the award for best song on the album. It has an riff similar to that on "Armageddon It." This puts today's pathetic excuse for a "music scene" to shame. Shame, shame, shame to Island Records for not using this song as a full-fledged single rather than just a rock radio single. This is another song that could have skyrocketed X to the top.
7) Torn To Shreds 9/10
Very reminiscent of "Hysteria", sounds like a slightly updated version of the classic Def Leppard sound. This was another potential smash, who's the crackhead who promotes Def Leppard's albums? Whoever he is, take him to a rehab center, and fast!
8) Love Don't Lie 9/10
No, this isn't a cover of the House Of Lords song. This is another really good song, like a lightweight version of the sound of Euphoria. People say this is sounds like the Backstreet Boys. Could you do me a favor, please tell them to shut the fuck up for me. Def Leppard isn't as hard as they once were, but they're not the fucking Backstreet Boys.
9) Gravity 8/10
Starts out with strange effects. This song is in no way shape, form or leppard, classic Def Leppard. In some sick way though, this is a good song. One of the strangest ones on the album, but this is perfectly normal compared to Slang. Now (DAMN! that word again!) people say X is a pop album, but it's not, it's more of an AOR version of classic Def Lep.
10) Cry 6/10
Damn, I didn't know we were listening to Slang. This song is the biggest resemblance to Slang on the whole album. It's still less dark than anything else that's on that album. The weakest song featured here, a take it or leave it song.
11) Girl Like You 7.5/10
Sounds like an outtake from Euphoria. Like a slightly mellowed out version of "21st Century Sha La La La Girl." This is a better song than "Cry" which almost makes me wanna "cry" but this still isn't the greatest song on this album.
12) Let Me Be The One 8.5/10
A ballad with violin in the background a little like in Trixter's "As The Candle Burns." Except that this song picks up during the choruses. Good song, but not as good as "Long Long Way To Go." It does get back on track after the last two songs though, gets us ready for the next masterpiece, "Scar."
13) Scar 10/10
Def Leppard has always done on thing, they have put one epic on every album they've ever dong (except Pyromania where they had two). They don't break that tradition here. This isn't as long as every other epic they've done, but this is the longest song on the album. It's got a High N' Dry/Pyromania fell. The epic this is closest to is "Paper Sun." X definetely marks the spot on this song.
Comments
Def Leppard has nailed a great formula here. Too bad they scrapped promotion of this album, cause even though this isn't my favorite Def Leppard album, it's still great. It's better than Slang and easily better than On Through The Night which I don't like at all. This is a wonderful release, I miss the hard rocking Def Leppard, but I'm happy with this album here. I hope Def Leppard makes a Hysteria 2, but at the same time I want the to continue in this direction. Very fun album to review, being that Def Leppard is one of my all-time favorites.
