Do you miss the Slave To The Grind days of Skid Row? Well you're in luck. Pyn Siren is a much-hyped band in the returning hard rock scene. Not really returning, because it never truly went away, rather it went underground. What is the significance of the Skid Row mention? Well Pyn Siren has been said to capture the magic of Skid Row. Just a side note, Danny Mariano, the vocalist was in the band Rage Of Angels. Also, Dale Gilfort, the bass player was in Ted Poley's post-Danger Danger band Bone Machine. Now does Pyn Siren live up to the hype? Why don't we find out.....

1) Cry Me A River 10/10

Rocker in the same vein as Skid Row's "Livin' On A Chain Gang." The singer, Danny Mariano sounds like a cross between Sebastian Bach and Mike Matijevic. Out of every band that has been compared to Skid Row (Slik Toxik, Sven Gali) Pyn Siren is the one that most captures the Skid Row magic. Without Sebastian, Skid Row can't even capture the Skid Row magic. Danny Mariano is ass-kicking. The music compliments each other and your ears are taken by storm.

2) Die 9.5/10

Drums get this bad boy going. This song lives up to its name, it's to "die" for. Once again, this is like Skid Row meets Steelheart. I also see a little Vicious Circle era L.A. Guns in the sound. This is a fast rocker that keeps the momentum that "Cry Me A River" started.

3) Saigon 10/10

Another Skid Row-ish rocker. This song is very reminiscent of Skid Row's "Mudkicker." Sometimes I'd swear it was Baz himself singing here. This band, needless to say obviously loves Slave To The Grind era Skid Row. Hell they even called their album Slave To Your Master. What's the significance? Well Skid Row, as you know had an album called Slave To The Grind. So the significance is both bands used "Slave To" in their album titles. Despite that Pyn Siren doesn't have a very original album title, they're awesome, and this is a band that deserves international success.

4) H.L.J. (Hung Like Jesus) 9/10

Mid-tempo rocker in the vein of Saigon Kick and Skid Row. I know, not exactly an original statement, but how many original ideas can one come up with? I feel like Pyn Siren with their unoriginal album title. This is another good song. I usually like rockers like "Cry Me A River" but downbeat songs are fun sometimes. It's like this is a diverse band, but it's not. They stick with their Slave era Skid Row feel, but their songs sound slightly different.

5) Higher 10/10

Danny sounds like a cross between James Hetfield and Sebastian Bach here. Awesome opening riff, they lead guitar squeals here sound like Van Halen in the beginning. We've hit what may very well be the best song on the album. Best way to put it is, this song gets me higher!

6) Sister Whiskey 9/10

I'm reminded of Ugly Kid Joe in the beginning with the acoustic guitar intro. Cat's In The Cradle? Not quite but this song is kinda Ugly Kid Joe-ish. It sounds a little like something from their 1995 album. This is a mid-tempo rocker. The musicians are so tight here, that if you tightened them any more, who knows what would happen?

7) Confused 9.5/10

I'm so fucking confused. What album was I doing again? Tesla? No I already did them. TNT? No, I already did that too. I GOT IT! I'm reviewing Nirvana? NO! Why the fuck would I be reviewing them? I REALLY AM CONFUSED!!! OK, no I'm not, you gotta have some humor going. I'm reviewing "Confused" by Pyn Siren. Sorry about the tangent, folks. About the song, this is another ass-kicking tune we've come to expect from Pyn Siren.

8) Dance For Your Lover 9/10

It was bound to happen. In just about every album, just when you think it's all rockers, the ballad comes in. I know what you're thinking, no, this isn't a ripoff of "Quicksand Jesus." Pyn Siren has their own thing going with the ballads. I love this song. It makes you forget that grunge ever happened.

9) Slave To Your Master 9/10

Ah, the title track. Somehow I expected this to be what it is...a heavy midtempo rocker. Don't worry, it's not as heavy as the Nutty Professor....All kidding aside. This isn't a bad song, I'd say I'm a slave to this album.

10) Lil By Lil 9/10

Pyn Siren finshes the album off nicely with a Skid Row-like rocker with a Saigon Kick vibe to it. I don't know what else to say about this song, except that they've done it again.

Comments

A very Skid Row influenced band. Hey, if we can't have the real Skid Row, I'll go with a clone. Don't let that give you the impression that Pyn Siren is a Skid Row clone. They're like Skid Row meets Steelheart. The only thing these guys suck at is making bad songs. This is not as good as Slave to the Grind, but whether you're a diehard Skid Row fan, or just like late 80's/early 90's hard rock, this is undoubtedly worth it.
