Remember L.A. Guns and Motley Crue? If you don't you've been living under a rock, let me lift it up. Motley Crue and L.A. Guns are two awesome bands from the 80's metal era. Nikki Sixx of Motley Crue and Tracii Guns of L.A. Guns have started a supergroup which originally was called Cockstar, Motordog, now Brides Of Destruction. I'm glad they went with what they went with. Early on, this band included John Corabi (The Scream, Motley Crue, Union, Ratt, Twenty 4 Seven) and Adema drummer Kris Kohls.
Full Lineup:
London LeGrand (vocals)
Tracii Guns (guitar)
Nikki Sixx (bass)
Scot Coogan (drums)
Now why don't we give the album an autopsy huh?....
1) Shut The Fuck Up 9.5/10
This is the perfect way to kick this album off. Intro has the band talking as if they are in the studio doing a take. They say: "Ready? No but what song are we doing? Shut The Fuck Up. What's my tattoo say? It says dude. What's mine say? Sweet. Let's do this what is this song? Shut the fuck up." Then the song kicks off in high gear as you would expect from Tracii. This is a very rocking song. London is a killer vocalist, he's a total unknown, once you hear this, that will change. This here is a perfect opener. I'll "Shut The Fuck Up" about this now and get on with the rest!
2) I Don't Care 10/10
Hard rocker with very L.A. Guns-like verses. It would have fit very well on L.A. Guns' 1988 self-titled debut. The choruses and pre-solo make me think of The Donnas. Brides Of Destruction is doing great so far. Two songs running The Brides are kickin' down everything in sight!
3) Two Times Dead 9/10
Starts out with a heavy guitar riff something a little like L.A. Guns' "Hellraisers Ball". This is where the early Soundgarden vibes come in. I have to say London sounds like Chris Cornell at times. Not a bad thing, Chris Cornell is a good vocalist even though I'm really not a huge Soundgarden fan. You know what else is good? This song!
4) Brace Yourself 9/10
If you're not ready for another killer, "Brace Yourself" actually maybe you should let your guard down, then you'll be blown right off the map! This has more of a Motley Crue feel. Sounds like something that would have fit on Motley's Shout At The Devil release. THIS SONG SUCKS!!! I lied, it owns.
5) I Got A Gun 8/10
Starts out with guitar picking, there's not much intro to this one. A little distortion starts, then it picks up during the chorus. This song is more mellow than the last 4 tunes on this one. Does it suck because of that? No, but it's not the best song on the album either.
6) Life 5/10
One of the more modern sounding ones. The verses are pretty slow. It goes into high gear in the choruses. It has the modern vocal harmonies. Too much modern stuff for my taste. Blah. It rocks but it's not that great.
7) Natural Born Killer 7.5/10
Not quite as modern sound as "Life." They mention their original name Cockstar in the song before the chorus in one part of the song. All in all, I prefer this over "Life." London sounds a like Axl in this song. Simoultaneously, this song would have been done very well by Skid Row, it sounds like something that would have come from the Slave To The Grind sessions.
8) Revolution 8/10
Starts out with bluesy guitar playing, then morphs into a fast rocker. This song has the same approach as Skid Row's "New Generation" from the otherwise pathetic Thickskin. But this is more classic hard rock sounding. This is pretty cool. This is weird but I really can't bitch about it.
9) Only Get So Far 10/10
The album is finished on a positive note with a nice ballad. I love this song, it would be pretty successful these days. "Only Get So Far" has to be one of the best ballads I've heard in a long time. This should be their next single after "Shut The Fuck Up." If you go to see The Brides in concert, make sure you bring a lighter for this one.
Comments
This is a very cool supergroup band. It has the vibe of Soundgarden (before they were grunge), Motley, and a little of the classic L.A. Guns sound. It's not a perfect album. Some songs are vaguely modern sounding but all in all this is a superb effort. This could do pretty well nowadays. It may even cross today's music scene into 80's metal.
