Interview - Kevin DuBrow of Quiet Riot

DSC05142.jpgYou all know Kevin DuBrow, lead singer of Quiet Riot, which as a lot of you may know was the band who had the first heavy metal album ever to hit #1 on the Billboard charts. Recently, Kevin has done something he's wanted to do for years: a solo album. In this interview, Kevin will talk about the Bad Boys Of Metal Tour, the Quiet Riot years, and of course his new solo album In For The Kill which is a collection of covers of his favorite songs which influenced him into hard rock, and more...

Rock-n-radio: We're proud to have you with us today for Rock-n-Radio!

Kevin DuBrow:
Thanks!

RNR: So....Quiet Riot broke up last year, and now you've recorded your first solo album "In for the Kill". At what point did you decide to record an album of all covers?

KD: I've wanted to do a solo album for as long as I can remember. When Mike Varney contacted me the timing was just right. I wasn't busy and I was very motivated. I had intended to do an all original album but Mike wanted the covers CD.

RNR: Were these artists an inspiration for you to get into hard rock?

KD: Most definitely. Except for T-Rex which was Mike Varney's idea these are all artists I loved growing up.

RNR: What's great about your album is that you covered different songs than most people do by the bands you covered. Was it a priority for you to do different songs from these artists than what everybody and their mother has done countless times (i.e. Nazareth - "Hair Of The Dog")?

KD: I really didn't like the hits that every one else covers. I've always been into the deep album tracks and picked more obscure and cool tunes.

RNR: Who else was involved in the making of the new album?

KD: Michael Lardie formerly of Great White and now with Nightranger was instrumental in the making of this album. He's a brilliant producer, engineer and musician. It's also important for me to work with someone that I am friends with. Michael also brought that to the table.

RNR: In support of your new CD you were touring with THE BAD BOYS OF METAL tour, how did that go?

DSC05155.jpgKD: In musical terms it was great. My band (Chuck Wright (bass) Alex Grossi (guitar) Jeff Martin (drums) were awesome. Unfortunately Steven Adler and Jani Lane brought their addictions with them and it made the tour a real nightmare.

RNR: Why did Jani Lane leave the tour?

KD: You would have to ask him. (If you can find him) All I can say is that after he left the vibe got a whole lot better.

RNR: How did it feel having the first heavy metal album ever to top the Billboard charts?

KD: It was great. How could it be anything else?

RNR: Is there any chance Quiet Riot will get back together?

KD: That's a hard one to answer. I mean I love working with Frankie Banali, I love the idea of Quiet Riot and I think the band has a rich history and potentially lot more to say, but not everyone has the same sense of enthusiasm so we will have to wait and see.

RNR: What was your favorite Quiet Riot video?

KD: Bang Your Head

RNR: What was your favorite Quiet Riot song to play live?

KD: Love's A Bitch

RNR: You were the first to work with Randy Rhoads (before Ozzy), what was he like to write/play with?

KD: Randy was the best. He was the most pure musician I have ever worked with.

RNR: Why haven't Quiet Riot 1 & 2 ever been releases in the U.S.? Will they ever be?

KD: At this point they are not a priority to me. I am concentrating on the present not the past so it's hard to say.

DSC05156.jpgRNR: What are your fondest memories of all your years in the rock n' roll business?

KD: There are so many. A number one album, jamming with Steve Marriott, my friendship with Glenn Hughes and all that Frankie Banali and myself have accomplished together in spite of other negative forces we have had to deal with.

RNR: What is your opinion on the music scene of today?

KD: I don't have one.

RNR: Do you think there is a possibility that hard rock can ever reach the same popularity it did during Quiet Riot's prime?

KD:
No.

RNR: Anything you would like to add or say?

KD: My website is www.kevindubrow.com
